According to Texas Weekly, State Comptroller and independent gubernatorial candidate Carole "One Tough Grandma" Strayhorn shouldn’t bother to write rules for the new Texas Margins tax: Susan Combs, current Agricultural Commissioner and candidate for Comptroller says she’ll throw out any rules Grandma writes and start over when she is elected Comptroller.
While this means taxpayers won’t really know how to plan until after January, at least it puts them on notice that they can ignore whatever Strayhorn publishes. Or can they? In fact, most rules are written by the Comptroller’s non-political, career staff. If Combs doesn’t clean house, some of the new rules might survive in spite of her good intentions. Just another dilemma for CPAs and taxpayers to consider.
Since the new tax doesn’t go into affect until 2008 (based on 2007 numbers), Combs says there is plenty of time to get the job done.
