According to today's Tyler Morning Telegraph, Rep. Leo Berman (R-Tyler) is expected to file papers to run for Speaker of the House during the next legislative session.
Does that necessarily mean there will be a speaker’s race? Maybe not, according to Austin American-Statesman’s Jason Embry. He writes on his First Reading blog this morning, “… at this point, it is difficult to imagine how Berman, one of the more polarizing members of the House, puts together a 76-vote majority against a sitting speaker.” Berman has been at odds with Speaker Straus and Gov. Perry on immigration issues and blames Straus for the defeat of voter identification legislation in the last session.
