Chisum launches campaign for Speaker of the Texas House

All the political newsletters and Jason Embry of the Austin American-Statesman are reporting today the Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) has sent a letter (PDF) to House members announcing his candidacy for Speaker and soliciting their support. Chisum emphasizes his experience as contrasted to Speaker Joe Straus’s (R-San Antonio) inexperience. He also makes an argument that the Speaker should have the full support of the majority party and claims that Straus did not have that support in the last legislative session.

The announcement prior to the November 2nd elections puts all legislative candidates on notice that they will have a choice when they vote for Speaker when the legislative session opens January 11, 2011.

The only other announced candidate for Speaker, Leo Berman (R-Tyler), as we reported previously, has already announced his withdrawal from the race and pledged to Chisum.
