Dewhurst puts shortfall at $16 billion

Lt. Gov. Dewhurst and Speaker Straus have announced that additional current-year budget cuts would be asked of state agencies.

Dewhurst said the impending budget shortfall could be $16 billion, and “dismissed as exaggerated recent calculations by senior legislative staff members and others that placed the shortfall at $24 billion or higher,” according to Dallas Morning News writer Robert T. Garrett. Garret’s article quotes Dewhurst, "the numbers we've heard before include pretty aggressive new spending."

Everyone hopes Dewhurst is right.
