Correction: Texas CPAs do not have to register in California to prepare California tax returns

In our posting Some States Regulate Tax Return Preparers; California requires CPAs to register in California we indicated that California was the only state currently registering tax return preparers that did not exempt CPAs licensed outside of California. That was an error.

The California Tax Education Council’s website includes a Q&A section that explicitly states: he law is limited to overseeing tax preparers who are preparing state and federal tax returns for a fee within the State of California. Out-of-state tax preparers are not obligated to meet California requirements.

This clearly excludes Texas CPAs from having to register with California in order to prepare California tax returns. Our apologies for the incorrect information.
