That's an ongoing cry from property tax reform advocates and the press. Today the San Antonio Express News penned an editorial claiming commercial property owners are not paying their fair share. The editorial seems to be a rebuttal to the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association's recent study that says the larger burden that homeowners are carrying in taxation is not because of commercial property owners. We reported on that study last week. While the editorial does not take issue with the conclusions of the study, it claims the study "misses the point."
The editors say the point is "whether commercial property owners, by abusing the appeals process to create a cycle of lower medians that drive down their tax bills, are paying their fair share. They are not. Increasingly, their appraisals are not based on true and fair market value."
The editorial calls on the legislature to pass laws that require the disclosure of sale prices to county appraisal districts, a law legislators have been loath to pass in past sessions.
